How to Make a Referral

If you suspect your patient has cancer or a brain tumor, call the appropriate New Patient Hotline:

For after hour and emergency referrals, call our 24-hour Page Service, 617-632-3352. Ask for the pediatric oncology consult physician or pediatric oncologist fellow on call.

When you call

Our New Patient Coordinator will arrange an immediate appointment or schedule a visit, depending on your patient's needs. They will also:

  • Connect you with the appropriate specialist.
  • Identify what clinical materials you should send to us for review, such as X-rays, imaging scans, test results or blood smears.
  • Call the family and schedule the appointment; usually after you have spoken with them about the need for an oncology evaluation.

After your patient's visit

You will receive an update about your patient's diagnosis and treatment plan as quickly as possible.

To help our specialists conduct a precise evaluation, it is important they have as much information as possible about your patient's initial diagnosis before they arrive.

This includes any laboratory or pathology reports, any x-ray, radiographic or MRI images, as well as a list of any previous treatments your patient may have received. Please have as much of the following information gathered as possible when you call:

Patient Summary:

  • Address
  • Parent or guardian contact information
  • Insurance information

Complete Clinical Summary

  • Physician's name and contact information
  • Diagnosis, or working diagnosis, and list of presenting symptoms
  • MRI/CAT Scan films
  • Pathology slides and reports
  • Operative note, if surgery was performed
  • Radiation therapeutic summary, if radiation was delivered
  • Copy of protocol, if chemotherapy was administered
  • Comprehensive list of previous chemotherapeutic agents, with dates and doses, if chemotherapy was administered
