DF/CHCC ranks best in New England, tops in country
For the third year in a row, Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Center (DF/CHCC) was ranked the number one pediatric cancer program in New England, and one of the best in the country in U.S. News & World Report's 2010-2011 Best Children's Hospitals issue.
The top 30 pediatric cancer programs were assigned a score based on their reputation among pediatric cancer specialists, as well as factors such as survival after stem cell transplant, infection prevention, and volume of new patients.
"Being consistently recognized as one of the nation's premier pediatric cancer centers is a great honor," says Lisa Diller, MD, clinical director of Pediatric Oncology. "It's reflective of the exceptional care our team delivers to the young patients who come to us from around the world."
DF/CHCC placed third in the rankings, narrowly behind St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
In addition to the cancer accolades, Children's Hospital Boston ranked first in more specialties than any other children's hospital in the nation (heart and heart surgery, kidney, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, and urology). Children's is the only hospital to place in the top three in all 10 specialties, which also include diabetes and endocrinology, neonatology, cancer, gastroenterology, and pulmonary.
"The subspecialty rankings are spectacular," adds Diller. "They really speak to the depth of our medical team's expertise. When patients come here they receive the most advanced cancer therapies from our pediatric oncologists, but they also see the nation's best specialists in every possible medical discipline, including surgery, radiology and pathology."
Detailed rankings are available at www.usnews.com and will be published in the August 2010 print edition.
