Lux receives ASPHO career award

Samuel Lux, MD, emeritus chief, Division of Hematology/Oncology at Children's Hospital Boston, was recently honored with the 2010 American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO) Distinguished Career Award. The award recognizes an individual who has had a major impact in the field through research, education, patient care and advocacy efforts.
Lux's research has yielded major insights into the causes of red blood cell membrane disorders, specifically hereditary spherocytosis. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, reviews, and book chapters, including contributions to Nathan and Oski's "Hematology of Infancy and Childhood."
Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology and co-director of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program from 1985-2008, Lux is widely recognized as one of the most honored teachers and mentors in the field.
"Sam really is incredible; the number of people he has trained is extraordinary," said David Nathan, MD, Dana-Farber president emeritus at the award presentation. "I've known Sam for nearly a half-century, and I can't think of anyone who shares my values or the values of [ASPHO members] more."
Lux accepted the award April 9, at the 23rd ASPHO Annual Meeting in Canada. "This means more to me than any other award I've received," he says, "because it reflects my successes as well as those of the men and women I've had a chance to work with during the course of my career." of my career."
